Remove, Optimize and Minify

Now I have noticed I am getting errors many more errors about Render-blocking Javascript and Optimizing CSS delivery since I excluded jquery.js as you suggested in the other post…

there are multiple things going on here ted;
* jquery had to be excluded to get your JS working, so that was to be expected
* flowplayer now works thanks to jquery working, but flowplayer resources are not local, so are not aggregated by AO
* google fonts are not local, so are not aggregated by AO
* the autoptimized CSS-files are render-blocking by default, but you can use either “inline all CSS” or even “inline & defer”, cfr. FAQ for more info on those

so there’s room for some additional optimization, but sometimes a +90% pagespeed score is not possible (except if you’re willing to make sacrifices, removing or replacing some of the JS-based funstionality)

Thanks – I appreciate the clarification. Very helpful… I also checked the FAQ and I am down to what I believe are the remaining two spots I can possibly improve.. They are:

Minify JavaScript for the following resources to reduce their size by 2KiB (3% reduction).
Minifying https://www.westminstertech.com/…ize_50d79f5e4fbb86057f103eb98b0db3d7.php could save 2KiB (3% reduction) after compression.

Minify HTML for the following resources to reduce their size by 628B (1% reduction).
Minifying https://www.westminstertech.com/ could save 628B (1% reduction) after compression.

Also, I am not sure Autoptimize deals with this:

Your page requires additional network round trips to render the above-the-fold content. For best performance, reduce the amount of HTML needed to render above-the-fold content.
141.3KiB of the HTML response was required to render the above-the-fold content. This requires 4 network round-trips. Prioritize the above-the-fold content so that it can be rendered with only the first 2 round-trips’ worth of HTML.
None of the final above-the-fold content could be rendered with the HTML delivered within 2 round-trips.

If so then for all of these – any suggestions would be appreciated… If Autoptimize doesn’t deal with the last one – any suggestions on other plugins or fixes would be wonderful.

regarding the “minifying could save x KB”; these extra savings cannot be done by AO. for the JS (and the HTML that contains inlined CSS) that’s due to the “important” comments which are not removed by the JS optimizer AO uses, as they contain license information which should not be removed.

the network round-trips are caused by the fact that you’re now probably inlining all CSS, but the amount of CSS injected that way is big. you could try “inline & defer” so try to fix that ??

My website is MedicalResearch.com.

I am getting similar pagerank errors and have tried the W3 plugins several times but they keep ‘breaking’ the site (prints only partially displayed, removes all menus etc.

Is there a way to fix these errors without the plug-in?

Hi Marie;
Autoptimize (AO) can easily optimize your JS and CSS, but I cannot say for sure if anything would get broken in the default configuration. But if things do break, AO allows for specific configuration on the settings-page to resolve issues on most (if not all) sites.

The FAQ contains great deal of information on how to configure and troubleshoot AO.

Frank, autoptimize fixed the js but not the css errors from pageranking

here’s my ‘advanced’ settings:

HTML Options

Optimize HTML Code? Yes
Keep HTML comments? Enable this if you want HTML comments to remain in the page, needed for e.g. AdSense to function properly.
JavaScript Options

Optimize JavaScript Code? Yes
Force JavaScript in <head>? For performance reasons it is better to include JavaScript at the bottom of HTML, but this sometimes breaks things. Especially useful for jQuery-based themes.
Look for scripts only in <head>? (deprecated) Mostly useful in combination with previous option when using jQuery-based templates, but might help keeping cache size under control.
Exclude scripts from Autoptimize:
s_sid,smowtion_size,sc_project,WAU_,wau_add,comment-form-quicktags,edToolbar,ch_client,seal.js

A comma-seperated list of scripts you want to exclude from being optimized, for example ‘whatever.js, another.js’ (without the quotes) to exclude those scripts from being aggregated and minimized by Autoptimize.
Add try-catch wrapping? If your scripts break because of an script error, you might want to try this.
CSS Options

Optimize CSS Code?
Generate data: URIs for images? Enable this to include small background-images in the CSS itself instead of as seperate downloads. Yes

ok, the remarks you’re getting in Pagespeed Insights is due to (optimized) CSS being inserted the normal way. you can either switch to “inline all CSS” or the more complex “inline&defer”, both of which are explained in the FAQ.
