remove (exclude) custom post type from seach results

I am using the Genealogy plugin which uses a custom post type called family. I would like to be able to exclude the custom post type (family) from search results on my blog. I think I need a search filter to exclude the post type. Is there any way to do this?

The reason is that every time I put in my last name which is in the domain name for my site I get all of the custom posts that have a link to a photograph (the link containing my name in the domain) appear even though nowhere in the text or title of the post is my name written other than being in a link to the media file. Could there be another way to fix this so the custom posts are still searchable?

normally this doesn’t occur in search for my blog for normal posts with identical links to media except with this custom post type
