I would like use your plugin to add both Att Categories and Att Tags to a site I am developing. I want media managers to be able to easily add both to each image uploaded. However, the additional click introduced in the media details modal we use to add this data to an image is kind of a deal killer for my client. Why should we have to click “<- Click to toggle” to expand *both* areas? And even if I do that, it is not persistent when moving to another image to add the data there. That is a pretty glaring UX issue that I would hope could be configured to behave differently in the settings. But I can not find that anywhere. What can be done to remove this problem so that the media details modal displays the predefined list of Categories as check boxes and Tags as the regular tag list editor without having to click to expand those areas?

    Thanks

Thanks for your question and for the explanation of your client’s needs. I understand your description to mean that you would like to automatically expand the taxonomy elements of an item when it’s selected.

The “Click to toggle” behavior is used to increase the performance of the Media Manager Modal Window. When there are many terms defined the amount of data and markup downloaded for each item becomes quite large.

I believe you can achieve your goal by setting an MLA option. Navigate to the Settings/Media Library Assistant General tab and scroll down to the “Media Manager/Media Grid Enhancements” section. Check the “Media Manager auto-fill meta boxes” box to “automatically fill MLA-enhanced meta boxes in the “ATTACHMENT DETAILS” pane when the item is selected.”

I hope that gives you the results you seek. I am marking this topic resolved, but if you have problems or further questions regarding the suggested solution post an update and I will try to help. Thanks for your interest in the plugin.

Thank you David, that worked well and gets us significantly down the road. But it only worked for the Categories list… any chance this could be expanded to include a solution for the add Tags metabox shown there as well? The client will be doing a lot of data entry and having it opened by default would be better.

Thanks for your update with the good news on our progress. In the current MLA version, the “Media Manager auto-fill meta boxes” option fills the term lists and assignments for all taxonomies but only opens the first taxonomy’s area. I will see if I can change that to both fill and open all of the taxonomy areas. I will post an update here when I have progress to report.

Excellent! Thank you for being so responsive. That is rare here and I definitely appreciate your efforts.

Hey David! Any ideas on the idea of expanding the tag interface by default?

Thanks for your patience in awaiting progress on this enhancement.

I have uploaded a new MLA Development Version dated 20230428 that contains a new “Media Manager auto-open meta boxes” option. You can find step-by-step instructions for using the Development Version in this earlier topic:

PHP Warning on media upload with Polylang

Once the Development Version is installed and active you can navigate to the Settings/Media Library Assistant General tab, scroll down to the “Media Manager/Media Grid Enhancements” section and check the box for the new option. The option default is unchecked so other MLA users will not suddenly see a change in behavior.

This enhancement will be part of my next MLA version, but in the interim it would be great if you could install the Development Version and let me know if it works for you. Thanks for inspiring this MLA improvement.

    David,

Yep! Worked exactly like I was suggesting. I appreciate your doing that! I think this enhancement will improve the admin UX significantly for my client. Will you just push the update out sometime soon and it will then show up as an update?

Thanks for testing and confirming the new feature. It will be incorporated in my next update, but I don’t plan to do that for a few weeks since I have other work in progress. The Development Version is release-quality, so you can feel confident deploying it in the interim. It will be automatically replaced by the next update.

I have released MLA version 3.09, which contains the enhancements required for this topic.

I am marking this topic resolved, but please update it if you have any problems or further questions regarding MLA’s support for the new “Media Manager auto-open meta boxes” option. Thanks for inspiring this MLA improvement.
