• I just installed wordpress and it came up with all kinds of things on a new page. I got rid of most of them but can’t get rid of the archives and meta items. I tried dragging widgets off the page and more and they persist.

    I’d also like to know how to get rid of the search item.

    Just quickly off the top of my head, I seem to remember I had a similar problem many years ago, I resolved it by removing the widgets from the sidebar and replacing them with a blank, or empty, text widget. It would seem that some themes require you to have something in the sidebar, whether you want to or not and place search, archives and meta as default if nothing is chosen by the user.
