    When the gallery loads initially, I don’t want the root to load. Is that possible?

    Of course, you can customize gallery menu settings and one of the option disable All menu item.
    When you open gallery settings in backend you can find Menu options. Switch off Root Label option. As result this options hide gallery menu root item.
