Remember previous selection

When a user selects a digest option then leaves, then returns, the plugin resets that individual to the group default notification setting. Is there a way to override this to have the plugin remember the user’s selection when they rejoin a group rather than the group default?

We have some folks that have left, then rejoined and get a daily digest again for the group and are like “hey I turned this off before” and it took me a while to figure out what was going on.
