Registration without Passwort

To easen the registration process we are using a registration form without a password. The user is supposed to validate his account by clicking the activation-link sent by mail.
The question is now: how is the password generated? Can you make the “activate your account”-link force the new user to enter a password as it is the default behaviour when you are creating new users from within the admin-interface?
