Registered User Favorite Post

I’ve spent hours scouring the forums to find a handful of users looking for the same feature as I that doesn’t seem to exist. I have zilch experience when it comes to PHP and Data Bases so this comes as a hard pill to swallow when a feature that I need to complete a project is no where to be found.
I understand that WordPress was built as a personal blogging platform, but when you look at it closely, it can be a competent platform for a social community site, albeit not as robust as some other scripts, but a hell of a lot simpler.
So this leads me to my question, with my zilch knowledge of PHP and Data Bases, what direction should I go to make a plugin to make what seems like a simple feature come to life? Documents? Online References? Anything that can help.
Basically what I’m hoping to achieve is a Favorite Post plugin for registered users of my site, I’m using the authors.php hierarchy to act like a profile page with a list of submitted works (photos in my case) in conjunction with the YAPB plugin, all I need now is an “add to favorites button” which will place it in the members profile where others can view, also working in conjunction with YAPB, listing the favorites as thumbnails instead of the title. But at this point I’d be happy if it could only show titles.
Is this feature unreachable? undoable? or simply too hard to make, because that would explain why what seems like a simple feature has yet to see the day of light. And am I way out of my league here to even attempt to learn and make such a feature with my zero knowledge? If so, I can live with that and just move on and forget about the feature until I have the means to hire a programmer who will charge me $5000 dollars to make.
Sorry if this post seemed rather dramatic, but its the last piece to the puzzle.
