register/authenticate new users

Another newbie question. When using the Page Restrict plugin to restrict pages and register new users, I assume once someone registers I am supposed to create a new user – subscriber role? After a user registers, an email is sent with their user name and password and a link to the site’s login page. When the user logs in, they are directed to the back end of the site, which was unexpected and a bit confusing. How can I get the link to direct them to the front end? Maybe there is a way to remove the /wp-login.php part of the link address and just direct them to the site? Or? Thanks
