• I’d like to have the option of finding specific posts by choosing more than one category.

    The clearest example I can think of is an ecommerce site. You can select items by price, or by colour, by size etc… thus refining your search.

    Is it possible to use this technique with posts?

    Apologies if this is a silly question, but i can’t seem to find a solution without repeating categories countless times as sub-categories.

    Thanks

  • The navigation you’re looking for is called “Faceted Navigation” or “Guided Navigation” (https://www.alistapart.com/articles/design-patterns-faceted-navigation/)- I’ve been trying to find a way to implement this myself, but as of yet there does not seem to be any plugins – I’m sure it can be done, you might have to find a programmer to do it though.

    Thanks for your response, searching for a solution should be easier knowing the correct term!

    Knowing how important categories are to some sites (blogging in particular), I would have thought that this requirement would be commonplace.

    Good luck!

    Yeah, it’s half the battle sometimes…knowing what you don’t know! ??

    If you run into a solution, I’d really appreciate a note. I’ll do the same if I do as well.

    Cheers!

    @xtinahall,

    Have you found a solution yet?

    I have come accross an advanced search plugin HERE

    You can edit the search form so it simply shows tick boxes for various categories, might be worth looking into.

    Thanks @randomgift. I’m digging around in their site (https://www.zirona.com/software/wordpress-advanced-search/) and not finding reference to how that would work.

    Are you using it somewhere?

    Only on a local server.

    It doesn’t really get us any closer to using faceted nav to refine a search, but at least there’s an option to select more than one category for the search.

    So I could tick ‘category A’ and ‘Category B’, for example. And the search would return posts which are in either of those categories. I was hoping to find a way to show posts which are in both.

    No luck yet though!

    Oh! Bummer!
    BTW, Thanks for remembering me. I dropped the whole idea with the project I had been working on. But I can definitely see it as a useful thing to have. I’ll be sure to let you know if I do ever find something!

    @xtinahall,

    Have you seen the Dhiti Drive plugin?

    I’ve not tried it myself but the docs mention the following features:

    * Contextual recommedations powered by a semantic engine.
    * Automatic Content enrichment.
    * Informed navigation for your users.
    * Interaction with concepts and topics.
    * Analytics to help drive your content strategy.
    * Faceted search.
