Redirect Category to page – good or bad for seo?

That’s an interesting question! In general 301 redirects are relatively safe when it comes to SEO – for sure much saver than temporary redirects with 302 code. Having that said, the internet resources are quite contradictory on whether a 301 redirect affects page ranking, so in general it’s better to be careful. If you do use redirects, a good idea is to make sure that there are no redirect loops, dead ends, and other similar problems. Here is an article that explains what’s best to avoid:

Having that said, probably the most important factor to affect your SEO is the content of the new category page. I’d recommend to make sure it’s all up to date, contains all the products and links to the product pages and all the information that would bring the customers to the original page.

Thanks for the reply – interesting reading – I wonder if there is an alternative way of changing the url’s without using 301’s , I haven’t found a way to create “custom” category pages

You could create a custom category template and then do whatever you want with that.
