Redirect a subdomain to root? yet another variant!
-
Hello,
I know redirect questions are a perennial favorite, as I’ve read a slew of threads about them, but I haven’t seen any that applies to my situation, so here goes:I have a site (architecturalwatercolors.com) built on WP with WooCommerce; the theme is no longer supported and a major WC update broke functionality and so I rolled back and froze the main site and created a subdomain (test.architecturalwatercolors.com) and used the Duplicator plugin to mirror the site and database, so I could renovate the site with a new theme and redirect once everything was running smoothly, which is now the case. In both installations, WP resides in the subfolder */wordpress2
Going about the redirect has stumped me though. My hosting service allows me to do a simple domain to subdomain redirection by defining a URL, but what is the correct address, and what needs to be done in BOTH wordpress installations to make the redirect function properly?
I’ve tried changing the site address (URL) in General Settings for both sites simultaneously (by giving the main site an invalid URL and the subdomain the main site’s root URL) and defining the redirect URL on my hosting site as https://test.architecturalwatercolors/wordpress2 (which is the url showing in my browser as the subdomain’s homepage). While this does bring up the header of the new site, everything else is a 404. Do I also need to edit the functons.php or .htaccess files as well? If so, for which site, or both, and how?
It may also be that this is not the best way of going about this. If so please advise!
