Redesigning A Website – Would Like Input
-
Hello WordPress fanatics!
First, thank you for taking the time to read my post. I am in the process of helping a friend with his website. The website has been online since the late 90’s and it’s a gaming community that was originally geared towards World War II games. Fast forward – after some server crashes and data loss the site has never fully recovered. My opinion is that the user base just became tired of date loss and moved on to other communities. The owner doesn’t fully comprehend that it isn’t the 90’s anymore and everyone who can make a Enjin or Wix account can make a gaming website. I’ve been trying to convince him to move away from Invision due to the complexity of it vs what he wants to accomplish and to move to WordPress. He is convinced that WordPress is a security issue and it isn’t as powerful as Invision and I’d like to convince him that isn’t the case.
Now, on to my questions for the WordPress mock up I’d like to make for him.
What I would like to do is make a site that has subdomains that utilize single sign on. I would need only one site to control the login/registration and data for the users and the subdomains to pull from that user_meta from the main site. Also, if I decided to use buddypress for social interaction – I would need that data to be shared across the other sites/network. For example : Main Site (news etc) Community (buddypress perhaps?) Forums (subdomain) Air Section (subdomain), Land Section (subdomain) etc. Is this possible?
I have also tried to convince him to move away from “forums” and move towards a “group” function. What the community needs is a way for people to create their own groups and allow discussions to happen inside of those groups vs creating a static forum with pre-set topics etc.
The main reason I would like to move from Invision to WordPress if simply for the blogging feature as well as themes that don’t break after every update. I would ideally like to push for more “content” to help grow the community and grow from there. It’s been a hard sell – but it is hard to convince someone that Walmart and Amazon didn’t start at the size they were today. They were small and obscure and grew to the size they are. One can’t expect to start out at Walmart size on a 7-11 budget.
Thanks for your feedback looking forward to some creative solutions to these issues.
