red & green boxes on tickets – different for recurring events?

I’m trying to figure out why the “red/green squares” on the tickets for our recurring events are (apparently) always red.
I already did some searching on this top, and found this post…

But that’s not very helpful, since it just points back to some docs that say “it turns green when Events Manager thinks the ticket is available”.
How does EM decide that a ticket is available or not, for a recurring event? The tickets I’m looking at are definitely available on some of the days. I can go and book them. But the little square is still red.
Also, what does “grey” mean. I’m guessing it means “not saved”, since that’s the only place I’ve seen it?
And finally, one of the other users of the site asked about black. I’ve never seen black, but can that show up? If so, what does black mean?
This is all for recurring events.
