I have a peculiar problem that every week or 2 all thirsty affiliate links break and instead of redirecting, just show a 404 page on my site.

Each time this is resolved by deactivating and then reactivating the plugin but this manual activity is not ideal.

Is there anyway I can prevent this happening?

    Hi,

Check if your link is set up properly and has a destination URL and that destination URL starts with https:// or https://

This is a common issue usually caused by another plugin or theme not flushing redirect rules correctly after setting up another custom post type.

As I mentioned, the problem is resolved by deactivating and reactivating – the links themselves are correct.

I also haven’t created a custom post type for over 1 year so do not believe this can be the cause.

This happens every few days now with 500+ links generating 404 errors. I have to manually deactivate and active thirstyaffiliates every few days to keep the plugin functional. Can you not offer some kind of assistance here?

    Hi,

Could you please tell me which version of ThirstyAffiliates are you using? The latest version is 3.10.17.

Also, if you haven’t already, please do the following after deactivating/reactivating the ThirstyAffiliates plugin:

    1. Visit the Settings->Permalinks page and click save.
    2. Go back to ThirstyAffiliates->All Affiliate Links and view one of the links, it should be redirecting properly.

    Hi there,

Yes using the latest version and I’ve already followed these steps. I do exactly this every time all 500 links begin to generate 404s:

    1. Deactivate thirsty affiliates.
    2. Reactivate thirsty affiliates
    3. Go to settings -> permalinks and click save

As I say, every time this resolves the issue but it is only temporary. I need to do this at least once a week as every single one of the 500 links reverts back to 404 after a time.

    Hi,

Do you have any sort of caching set up on your site? If you do, you might try excluding your ThirstyAffiliates link prefix (like /recommends/ or any other prefix that you set) from caching and see if that helps prevent the 404s going forward.

Thanks for the suggestion. I’ll wait until the next time the links break and then clear my site’s cache to see if that resolves it. If it does I’ll add the links to the cache exclusions.

Unfortunately this continues to happen despite being an exclusion from caching. I can’t even identify a common trigger. Sometimes it happens when I update plugins (sometimes not), sometimes when I create a draft (sometimes not), sometimes when I publish a post (sometimes not). But if I leave the site alone for several days the links will stay functional. It seems any action I take in the backend is likely to cause all links to break.
