Just a quick question before I start replacing all images on my site.
I have been uploading 900px wide 72dpi images to balance site speed and limit use of uploaded images without permission/payment.
An obvious concern with now uploading ‘retina’ images is that the latter is harder to control.
However, related to the first, can you recommend a pixel width and dpi to balance the retina images with impacts on site speed?
Thank you for the info and a great plugin.

For the site speed, you can upload 1800px (72dpi) wide file with no problem. Only the retina devices will load those, and the others will not.

However, you are talking about payment, and of course the bigger the photos you upload are, the more easily someone can steal them and re-use them.

    Thanks Jordy

Appreciate the quick response…and on a Saturday night no less!

Glad to hear large files won’t affect site speed. Now to replace 600 files… Glad you included that awesome function to replace files without affecting title/featured image, etc

It is Saturday morning where I am (Tokyo), I am having my coffee ??

It will affect speed, of course, but with nowadays connection not so much. And it’s better to have a good-looking website for the Retina devices.

Let me know if it works well, I don’t think many people are using this function right now. It has to be perfect.

Please rate the plugin if you like it too ^^

Thanks a lot and good night ??

I found one possible bug – but likely related to the replacement plugin you are using.

While it keeps the title of the image on the Media page, if I go to the original post and click on the image, I find that the alt text is retained by the title is missing there. Not sure what effect that might have on seo…

When I’m done, I’ll be sure to rate it and send over a donation to at least cover that cup of coffee ; )

I actually destroyed my MacBook Retina with a cup of coffee recently, so why don’t you cover the MacBook instead? Haha :p Thanks a lot for the though, this is nice.

Really? The “replace” function absolutely must ONLY replaces the file, and nothing else! Okay, I will add this to my to-do list, it has to be done asap. I knew I would have to dig more into that plugin I forked…

You might be using an older version? Looks like there was an issue with 3.5 and that plugin was updated.

I actually installed that plugin, deactivated yours and replaced a file. The title ‘stuck’.

I’ll work on replacing now and then go from there. Also realizing that I probably will need to run the ‘regenerate thumbnails’ plugin as my original posts all were done with a ‘large’ size of 900 x 600. That would effectively diminish anything I do with your plugin I presume.

I am using an alternative version because I have issues with in in the past. You can still have my plugin enabled and use the other one instead, they can work together as well (but don’t use the REPLACE from my plugin in that case).

My version of the “replace” function shouldn’t do anything else that replacing the file, keeping the same filename. And of course shouldn’t modify the posts neither.

I am not sure you need to use Regenerate Thumbnails, the replace plugin is doing it already I believe.

My plugin will generate the Retina files in the back of all those processes anyway, you probably don’t have to do anything manually with it (but if it is disabled, of course there will be no Retina images, or they will remain the old ones…)

The Replace of the plugin has been completely upgraded and cleaned. Please look forward for the next release ??
