recomend a way to get started designing themes?

what is the best way to get started designing themes? I am wanting to learn how to design a wordpress theme for my site. This is the only theme I will be designing and maintaining
option 1
mod the default wordpress theme (OK option might be easiest)
option 2
create one from the sandbox theme (looking like the best option, it will give the a soled base)option 3
mode a theme that is close to what I want (I don’t thinks this is a good idea could be hard to upgrade)
