Recent update suppresses website

On a host with PHP 5.3, with plans to update soon. The plugin updated automatically overnight on one of my sites, and the site became unresponsive (the URL will just display a white screen/not load). If I chmod 000 the cleantalk-spam-protect plugin directory, the site comes back.
Was there an update pushed overnight that has new requirements, maybe on PHP?
