If using 1.2.x, edit your index.php. For 1.3, look in wp-sidebar.php. In either case, dig out the following section of your template:

<div id="menu">

Insert the get_recent_posts() tag somewhere after this div line, where you want it to appear.

I have tried to do that, but I keep getting an error message:

Here is part of my index.php code that I edited:

Did you install and activate the Recent Posts plugin? The error you’re getting means the function is not recognized by WordPress.

No I didn’t know about that plug-in.

Where can I find that at?

How exactly do I activate the plug-in?

The Recent Posts most refer to around here (and of which get_recent_posts() is a function) can be found in Nick Momrik’s plugins collection:

Download Plugins.zip and extract recent-posts.php from it. Upload that file (using ftp) to your wp-contents/plugins folder, and activate it under Plugins in your WordPress admin pages.

Actually
<?php wp_get_archives('type=postbypost&limit=20'); ?>

would work for recent entires, in the example above generating 20 latest entries.
