Receipt emails as spam
-
Hi there,
do you have any idea why the emails are marked as spam? What file handles the email? ??
And sometimes emails won’t be delivered at all. Is that an e-mailclient setting or?
Thanks!

Hi,
Emails can be marked as spam for a variety of reasons – and only some of it has to do with the contents of the emails themselves. A lot of it has to do with the reputation of the sender (IP address of server, domain signing, previous readership of emails from the same address). I believe Mailchimp has some good documentation on this subject.
If emails aren’t being delivered, are they being bounced? Or are they just not being sent?
Cheers,
Jacob
Hi Jacob, thanks for you reply.
I guess you’re right about the variety of reasons.
About the e-mails that are not being sent.. I tried with 4 kinds of e-mailadresses, including 2 gmail ones. Whenever I buy a product with a gmail account, the mail gets sent to the spambox. When I use another email (such as [email protected]), I get the mail in my normal inbox. When I use the email – [email protected] – I just don’t get the mail. I don’t know if they’re getting bounced, any idea how I can check?
Seems that everything works differently. One goes to spam (gmail), one does the correct thing (.org account) and one doesnt get delivered (.nl account). =p
It doesn’t really surprise me that you’d get different results from different email providers – spam is defined very subjectively.
Gmail tends to be more hawkish than other providers. They actually have documentation about how to help get your emails not marked as spam. I believe domain signing is one of their recommendations. Also, out of curiosity: Did you try adding the sending email address to the gmail account address books? I’ve heard that asking your customers to do that can help… Though you obviously can’t rely of them to do it!
What are you using as the sending address? Is it a real email address that can receive bounces? That’s one easy way for you to know whether you’re getting bounces.
That might indeed be one solution to just ask customers to “accept” mails coming from this website.
It’s actually just a normal emailaddress. I have the settings here, but have no idea what to look for :p
I just checked with a similar account (also [email protected]), but that works as expected. So it must be a provider setting of some kind.
If your sending address is a real mailbox, you should be receiving any bounce messages. If you’re neither receiving the emails nor the bounces, it’s possible the emails aren’t even being sent.
There are some WP plugins you can use to track email sends. That won’t tell you whether emails are being received, but if there’s something preventing emails from being sent then you’ll be able to narrow down your problems a little. For example, a PHP error in one of your mail templates could stop those messages from being sent.
I’m gonna try one of these plugins.
Btw, thank you very much for the good support, haven’t seen that online in .. ever!
Ha! You’re welcome.
It can sometimes be exhausting providing support, but I’ve found it to be a rewarding experience.
Also, I appreciate your resolving this through the support forums. I get a fair number of support requests by email. I don’t mind that, but when it happens in public others can learn from it too.
Haha, I know man ??
Yeah, I’ve seen the same question from 7 months ago, I thought you’d given up on support. I was bald enough to ask the same question in another topic, and it helped me move on =)
Thanks for the plugin and support!
Hi, Jacob.
I’m still having these issues as why customers with a Gmail or Hotmail account do not get e-mails (sometimes in spam, sometimes not at all).
After digging around I found out something. First I disabled your plugin and made an order. Everything worked fine with the standard wp e-mail (plain text). I got the “Thanks for the order”, “Kwitantie (quotation i guess?)” and “Tracking Mail”, they work fine.
Now, I enabled your plugin again and went to the administration setting to change the Tracking message. I found out that if there’s an anchor link, the mails will NOT get send. I delete the link, and the mail was sent right into my inbox including styling. Hooray for this bugfix.
Now, one more thing, I cannot get this to work for my other mails. In my templated I deleted all the anchor links, but they still won’t send. So I thought: this is where get in ^^
Any ideas?
Hi,
It sounds like this is a SPAM related question. Which means that the emails are sending and it’s a matter of reputation management to make sure they get delivered to inboxes. To clarify, sending HTML emails does mean that your emails are given more scrutiny by SPAM filters. But with some work, you should be able to get this working (it’s beyond the scope of my plugin though, because it also involves sending IP addresses and domain settings, among other things). Does that make sense with what you’re seeing? If so, I can provide some tips on improving the deliverability of your emails.
Cheers,
Jacob
