• I use the Generatepress theme (Premium version), a widely-used, fast, compact and highly regarded theme for WordPress. The forced change to reCaptcha v3 with CF7 moving to version 5.1 first resulted in spam coming through. Now, with the latest update, even legitimate form submissions were blocked (orange border error). The CF7 author blames bad theme behavior (not including wpfooter), but the theme’s author is very clear about the fact that he uses wpfooter correctly.

I am not even getting started about the fact that reCaptcha v3 might be great for higher-volume sites, but it is not appropriate for low-volume sites. Also, the badge on every page is too big, definitely on mobile. Sure, you can hide it with CSS, but please…

I reverted back to version 5.0.5 of this plugin and back to using reCaptcha v2. I hope the CF7 author thinks again about his choice and gives users a way to choose between the two reCaptcha versions.

  • I just solved my issue. I had reolled back to 5.0.2 while playing on my sandbox site. I too use GeneratePress, but that theme was not the issue. I have yet to determine if the spam will stop flowing, but as far as 100% form failing to send my issue was LightSpeed plugin.

In LightSpeed plugin I had to exclude /recaptcha/api.js by going to the Tuning Tab and entering /recaptch/api.js in to the “JS Exclude” box. I learned that scripts identified in there will be excluded from combining and minify in LightSpeed.

So at least my form “works” and sends the email. We’ll see how much spam gets blocked.

@davemelbourn OMG, thank you so much! When I saw your mention of the “JS Exclude” box, I knew I had to try this myself. I don’t use LightSpeed, but I do use Autoptimize, which also has a JS Exclude field. I entered /recaptcha/api.js into the field there and the forms on my clients’ websites now seem to be submitting properly w/o being auto-flagged as spam.

Agreed w/ finding out how much actual spam gets blocked, now, though.
