    Hi there,

I’m not sure I understand something…I have a Google Recaptcha API key, but I don’t see where to enable it (it says on the Challenge & Deny menu, but there’s nothing there, only for the second chance)

So when I go to the login page, I only see the arithmetic question. Or is this by design?

Can I add Google Recaptcha on the login via this plugin?

    Thanks,
    Roy

  • On the Challenge and Deny Stop Spammers configuration page there is a place to put the API keys. If you did it right, the google reCaptcha form will appear under the API keys, but only on the configuration page.

Normal users will never see the reCaptcha form on comments, registration and login. It is a “Second Chance” captcha.

Only users who were detected as possible spammers will see the second chance captcha dialog. The login screen and the comment screen are not altered. After stop spammers thinks that it has a spammer it shows another screen with the captcha dialog. If the user passes that the comment will be posted or the user will be allowed to register or log in.

Good users should never see the captcha dialog. Robots and spammers will always see it.

The captcha screen is only there because there are occasional false positives and you don’t want to lock out good users.

    Hi Keith,

I just found this plugin and it looks like it’s gonna be great. Thanks for writing and sharing it.

I wanted to chime in here as I had the same concern. Upon re-reading the notes, it does say that it will display the captcha “if a real user is blocked”. However, as a suggestion, maybe this could be made a bit clearer in the admin page. The section heading for the re-captcha does not say “second chance”, but some of the other sections do. I think this is perhaps what led to my confusion. Also, the instructions say that we need to enable it on the challenge & deny menu to the left, even though that menu item leads to the same page. Would it make sense to change that to read something like, “If the recaptcha form looks good you need to make sure ‘Google ReCaptcha’ is enabled in the ‘Second Chance Captcha Challenge’ section above.”?

Thanks again, and I hope this doesn’t sound like complaining. I’m just trying to help out.

    sshanky,

I understand your concerns. I have them too. The plugin has grown organically to a complicated mess in the last 5 years. It has branched out all over the place, and no matter how I try to prune, it is still fairly disorganized.

The project is a hobby, makes no money, and I have many many more pressing things demanding my attention. I work on it a few hours a month, if that. Someday, I want to go back and fix up the inconsistencies if I can.

I have added your notes to my TODO.txt file and will try to get to them.

    thanks,
    Keith
