Regarding: backend URL SLUG, reCAPTCHA authentication (v3), and using the Email Magic Link.

After I enter my Username to be emailed a Magic Link and click on the ‘I agree to these terms.’ to bypass the reCAPTCHA, I received an error regarding the reCAPTCHA and cannot log into the WordPress Dashboard. Instead, I have to log in SFTP and disable the iThemes plugin, log into the site using WordPress’ default admin method, go into iThemes and Activate the plugin. To test, I log out and then am able to relog in using the Magic Link.

The error issue has happened on more than one occasion, and it’s getting a little tedious to have to disable the plugin, log in, re-enable and then wait for another day till it blitzes out again and then go through the loop.

I have made sure that I am not running reCAPTCHA anywhere else on the site

    • iThemes Security Pro: v7.3.4
    • WordPress: v6.2.2
    • I have made sure that the hosting cache is not caching the dashboard
    • I am not running any other security or systematic plugins

Anyone else experience this type of hiccup?

    Thank you.

  • Hi @toad78,

… I received an error regarding the reCAPTCHA …

    What error exactly?

Hi @toad78, would you mind sharing what error are you getting? I’d also like to share this method you can use to temporarily disable all the plugin modules: How Do I Disable All Features If I Can’t Access My Site?.

I look forward to hearing from you!

Simply put, the reCAPTCHA error box above the login form stated something to the effect that the reCAPTCHA was invalid.

The only way I was able to get around it was doing the steps above. It hasn’t happend in a few days, but I’m not holding my breath. ??

Looks like this issue has occurred again. The error is:

The captcha response you submitted does not appear to be valid. Please try again.

All I did was post my username and clicked the blue “Email Magic Link” button and the system responded with the above error. Can’t log in. The v3 reCAPTCHA keys are just fine.

    Hi @toad78, I see.

It could be that the reCAPTCHA keys still need to be validated by iTSec first. Could you please try these steps and let me know if it works?

    • Generate new v3 reCAPTCHA keys from your Google account and save them on iThemes Security settings.
    • Open an incognito browser and head over to your login URL.
    • Input your login credentials and complete a login submission. If you have the GDPR enabled, click the “I agree to these terms.” link before submitting the form.

It is essential to complete these steps quickly, and kindly let me know if it helps.

If not, please try other browsers and see if you can replicate the error there. If you’re using the Brave browser, please try temporarily turning off the “shields” setting and see if it helps.

I look forward to hearing from you.

I believe what solved the issue was disabling another plugin’s usage of reCAPTCHA v3 (i.e., Gravity Forms). Since then, I haven’t had any further issues. Until next time. ??

Seems to have happened again but on a different site. At the login screen of the backend I choose to have a Magic Link emailed to me. After entering in my username or my email and clicking the link, I get this error message:
The captcha response you submitted does not appear to be valid. Please try again.

Once again, I had to disable the plugin just to log into the Dashboard.

I guesss there’s no fix for this issue? hmm…
