Rebuilding my site from scratch

  • I am the admin of a community that has multisite (sub-directory) and buddypress installed. We have over 1000 users. The problem is I didn’t build this community but came into it. I am wanting to build from scratch. What is the best way to do this with minimal service interuption? Specifically, what tables do I need to be looking to import into the new database so that no one even knows I rebuilt it? Is there an easier way to export/import users? I have backup buddy so the blogs are fine. Any suggestions would be great.

    How much ‘from scratch’ are we talking about? From scratch means starting over with new data etc. You sound like you want to have the old data on a new install.

    The ‘problem’ with this is your data is in your database. If you’ve been upgrading WP, there’s no reason to start from scratch, as you’d want to keep the DB intact. What’s your reasoning for the reboot?

    The problem is that I can’t upgrade to BuddyPress 1.5 with this install. And this fact has held the community back. I have read that I can just do a fresh install on the same database keeping the data intact. Is this correct? I will be building this install on a non-production machine until ready to switch to the production server.

    It really depends on WHERE the cowboy coding was, you know?

    If it’s just the files, you can replace them. But if it’s stuff in the DB, then probably best would be to make a localhost version of teh site, call it mydomain.loc, and use the hosts file to point there on your PC. Then import each site, one at a time, from the live site to your local. Make all your changes, get it up and running, and then move the data live.

    Problem there is any new posts made in the meantime might be lost.
