    Hi,

I am very new to WordPress and have just set up mysql to run it which has worked. I am intending to use wordpress to develop a few websites to then hand on to a pro developer to edit it in to a proper site.

I do not want to use WordPress to do anything apart from develop – it will not be placed on a remote server or anything like that and therefore have no requirements for ensuring security – just the simplest way to give me access to WordPress.

As a total noob I do not understand the installation instructions at all. I am stuck at the very start of step 2 where I am supposed to enter

    mysql -u adminusername -p

into terminal (I assume). It is a bad command and nothing happens.

Do I need to do something like go to root, or go to a directory where mysql is first?

I was reading your post thinking “MAMP would be ideal for you”, then I saw ipstenu’s response!

I’ve just set up MAMP myself for the first time (have always developed straight to the server before). You might want to take a look at “First Moments with MAMP” https://bit.ly/coFrRi – Nice little screencast with an overview of setting up WordPress with MAMP.

Thanks guys, yes I did spot this in my searches, I will check out the video. Looks promising I see some people commenting on that link are doing what I want to.

I suppose it might explain but do I need to remove the mysql installation that I already did before MAMP or is the mysql in MAMP inside it and separate?

Not sure if your MySQL install would clash or not. MAMP is self-contained so I suspect you’ll be fine.

However, I’ve not tried running both together. I guess as long as you only have one MySQL server running at a time (either the one you’ve set up or the one within MAMP) then you should avoid clashes.

Let us know how you get on!

Hi guys, after a very busy weekend I thought I’d update you as you tried to help. The guy who is doing the ‘making it look nice’ bit of the website said he can set WordPress up for me on his server in about half an hour, and then I can get on with it that way. He’s a very nice chap and isn’t charging for it, FOAF etc.

Nontheless thanks for taking the time to try and help me.
