Read more / continue reading – inline

Hello, this is my content tag:

<?php the_content(‘…Read more’); ?>

What’s troubling me is that the read more link appears on a paragraph beneath the content itself.. I solved this a few years ago in wordpress 2.X but I cannot recall how.
