• Ok, so I have a couple of problems and I have tried deactivating all plugins and switching to the Twenty Fourteen theme. I have also tried resettling my plugins folder or at least I think I have by some steps I took from another thread here.

All of this doesn’t work so the last thing I seem to be able to try is what was told to me before, “re-uploading the wp-admin and wp-includes folders from a fresh download of WordPress.”

I am not too sure how to do that and I am afraid to lose everything.

    Can anyone help?

  • Hi Shacks,

Copying the /wp-admin and /wp-includes folders over your own won’t overwrite anything to do with your content on your website. You aren’t going to loose anything. All your site specific assets are stored in /wp-content, i.e. your images/uploads/themes/plugins/etc and your content is in the database which shouldn’t be affected by copying in these files.

To do that, download the latest (or the same version that you are running) version of wordpress. Then connect to your website via FTP and copy over the files.

First of all, great explanation joelwarren!

Followup Question: If I am reading your solution correctly, the existing /wp-admin and /wp-includes folders should be deleted PRIOR to copying new /wp-admin and /wp-includes folders from a fresh, clean WordPress copy, correct?

Please advise and thanks in advance.

Thanks khw, I find it’s best to backup and delete the existing /wp-admin and /wp-include folders before copying the new files in. This means that if there were any extra compromised files there, you will get rid of them.

    Excellent. Your reply is appreciated.
