Re-size grid view

The default grid view for a full month (full page width) is too big as users have to scroll to see the last few days of the month. All I want to do is to reduce the size to say 70%, and centre it on the page. Our event listings are very simple so the size reduction shouldn’t cause any other problems for us. Maybe I need to use css. I have long experience of handcoding HTML/ASP websites and have used css in these, but I am a WordPress newbie. Any help appreciated!
