On the latest version of your plugin, you changed the “Notify of New Replies to Comment” in the comment form from a text with a checkbox, to some icon. The icon is confusing to users and they don’t know what it is. How do we just get back a checkbox for notifications instead of this icon?

I’m sorry but there is no way to change back design changes. This icons have tooltips, they says what they do. Also you can set the notification icon enabled by default so your commenters will not have to check it. This option will be available in a few days with 5.0.2 version.

Thanks for the quick reply. Once again, you have an amazing plugin, but please incorporate some user feedback.

In terms of the use of icons and tooltips, they are great for some people, but the vast majority of people who use the Internet, including saavy users like myself, prefer some immediately visible text to explain what the icons are. Tooltips really don’t do the job well. Even Facebook, puts some text next to most icons and doesn’t rely on tooltips.

In this case, simply putting the word, “Subscribe” next to the “Notify of New Replies” comment would help greatly for usability. I think you can do that with CSS. Please let me know.

We’ve made this icon based on dozens of our user emails. The checkbox with a text doesn’t look good. People want modern look and feel. All our changes are based on our users feedback majority.

Nothing wrong with a checkbox, even www.remarpro.com uses one and it sure hasn’t hurt them. Anyway, I didn’t say you need a checkbox, if you think it’s ugly. Just put one word of text next to icons to explain what the are and don’t rely just on tooltips.

I humbly suggest you look at what companies like Facebook do. You may think they are not modern, but they spend millions of dollars to study usability, and you can learn from them. They don’t rely just on tooltips for usability. Even the “Like” button, the most famous icon on the entire Internet, says: “Like” next to it on Facebook. Even your favorite site, YouTube, uses text next to some icons. Nobody relies on tooltips alone for important actions. The reason for this is based on billions of dollars of usability studies over decades. People scan pages quickly to understand what various options are, the combination of an icon and one word is the most powerful way to generate an action.

Sure, I mostly agree with you. But the design is not a small feature to change it with each small version release. We’ll collect all feedbacks and make changes in next major version.
Also please note. wpDiscuz allows you to copy the wpdiscuz.css file to your active theme and make any changes you want. All can be customized for your needs if it’s urgent and very important for you. You just need to find a good CSS developer.
