Some users of my site are getting ‘Authentication Failed’ when trying to login.

Login works for some uses, but not for others, I can’t seem to find a pattern. One user says his laptop logs in ok, but not his iPad.

I’ve tracked the problem to Google Re-Captcha v3, when I disable this in the Wordfence options, the issue goes away.

    Any ideas please?

  • Hey @bernieraffe,

This is a Google algorithm that we’re not privileged to know the ins and outs of :). However, you can adjust the reCAPTCHA human/bot threshold score in Wordfence > Login Security > Settings to see if it helps.

    Thanks,

    Hi @wfgerald

Thanks for the info, I tried various reCAPTCHA human / bot thresholds, and they all failed with the same Google reCAPTCHA authentication error.

However, I then tried using the highest possible value (very likely ‘human’), and then users reported receiving a ‘validation required’ email as opposed to the ‘authentication’ error. Once they had clicked on the authentication link within the email, it all worked fine.

So, thanks very much for your help, and although there appears to be a bug in the reCAPTCHA service, at least I can continue to use it, albeit at the highest threshold level.
