Whilst I am developing a WordPress website, I usually have the ‘Discourage search engines from indexing this site’ option selected in Settings > Reading, which, as I’m sure you are aware, adds the ‘noindex’ tag to each page preventing Google from indexing the site, even if has crawled it.

I went live yesterday (yay!) so unchecked this box and requested that the site re- crawled and indexed. On checking Google Search Console, I noted that it had already crawled weeks prior and had partially indexed the site! And sure enough, this feature option had been deselected.

The date of the first crawl was coincident with installing Rank Math.

Does Rank Math automatically disable the WordPress ‘Discourage search engines from indexing this site’ feature on installation?

I’ve checked with my client and he didn’t know what I was talking about, I certainly didn’t disable the feature, in your experience, do you know of any reason why this ‘noindex’ tag might be removed programmatically?

    Hello @tictag,

    Thank you for contacting support.

No, we don’t override the setting from WordPress, and the plugin will honor that and while that is enabled the “noindex” will be kept on the website even if you have the settings from our plugin to allow indexing.

Please note that this setting is to discourage search engines from indexing the website but unless you also have a “nofollow” directive it’s possible that search engines try to crawl the website. Also, this is a directive, hence why the wording from WordPress states “discourage” and not “prevent”.

Don’t hesitate to get in touch if you have any other questions.

Thank you for your reply. I have proven your position to be the case by noting the ‘robots’ meta-tag before and after installation and, as you say, the WordPress setting is honoured.

I will have to put this one down to a mystery!

Please feel free to close the ticket.

It only takes a couple of minutes, but it helps us tremendously.

It would mean so much to us and would go a long way.

    Thank you.
