Thank you for providing the screenshots and the SSR.

So it appears that once this metadata is written to the order line it FOREVER is part of the VISIBLE record.

This is quite a strange behavior.

Can you please share how did you add these metadata to the Order Line? Furthermore, does this happens on all types of products or is it specific to certain types only?

You mentioned that you cloned your site and the issue still persists. Can you please try to create several products on the cloned site and create a test order and see if the issue still persists afterwards?

We are doing nothing to make the meta data appear – it just randomly appears. We only have simple products and variable products on these sites. It happens equally randomly to either.

The phenomenon is happening on the original live site as well as the cloned site which has had every plugin disabled and reset to the base storefront theme – not even the child theme.

I’m beyond perplexed looking at the server configuration. I can’t explain how this could be happening and why it is not happening to other similar configurations – I monitor about 15 woocommerce sites that are all similarly configured.

Not to mislead anyone – but this first appeared after we had installed gravity forms and the gravity forms woocommerce plugin – we used the form to capture names on a simple name badge product. The only “link” was that module does expand the metadata section for the item its attached to. It was after that we first noticed. But initially, we found removing gravity forms and handling the product a different way made the random tax metadata stop. That was back about a month and a half ago. Those modules were removed – I do see the old tables in the database are still there.

But at this point even deactivating all plugins will not stop the random persistence. And yes we have about 100 orders a day being generated on the live site – 50% will have 1-2 lines with this metadata. And the cloned site produces nearly 100% of the orders…

We have even seen the phenomenon on an order with a single line.

Can you please check the error logs section? It is under WooCommerce > System Status > Logs (if any error is visible, let us know).

No errors in there – only thing is a log of the image regeneration done yesterday.

I have put debugging on, checked system and server logs – I find nothing… I wish I could find something.

I even went as far this morning as enabling Twenty-Twenty-One theme… deleted all historical orders in the cloned system – ran database utilities – moved the cloned site to another host – changed the test url – ran my first order and it was clean… that had me thinking it was something with the host. But then by the 2nd and 3rd orders here it popped back up again. I am just down to zero ideas…

Truly appreciate the input – please take a look at this – I decided to do some sql queries and exports to see what the underlying meta data looked like on these items showing these odd random entries.

This first entry compares the same product purchased in 2 back to back orders – the beach ball is fine on order 1604 but in 1603 it has the additional data.

To my surprise it is pulling metadata records that are at a much earlier created time YET they have the same order item ID.

After seeing this I dumped out my entire order_item_meta table and did another test on another product. My concern was that something during the purchase process was overwriting older records in that table… I WAS WRONG…

I found another example and because I had previously extracted the table I could see the entries were already there.

So then I did a simple scroll through the table and there is a clear reset of the order item numbers in the meta table… and what’s very interesting to me is look at the first few entries – they are meta data entries referring to gravity forms connected items.

Also, I notice a pattern of all the leading _underscores not being on the entries prior to the break and reset in numbers.

So my primary questions are this.
1) It’s not “right” that order item id’s would repeat correct? Those should always be unique correct?

2) Is there a known reason the “resetting” could happen?

3) Am I missing something or not understanding the way woocommerce creates those settings.

4) If I am close to right does anyone have any ideas on how I get out of this mess?

Just as an additional update – I ran a delete statement on all the metadata lines before the counter reset to 1 and that clears up everything. I am holding on applying this “fix” to my live site to see if anyone here has an opinion on how this happened. Clearly, we are having order item id numbers repeated and it is very odd that the first entries back to “1” coincide with the gravity forms woocommerce linked items being tested (they would have been test orders).

I’m glad you were able to find a solution to your issue here after several tests and hopefully, performing this to the live site would totally eliminate the issue.

If I may add, can you please have your host purge the cache from your site as well?

I am having the EXACT same issue. Random meta line showing up inconsistently with orders. It doesn’t happen all the time. Going to review the comments above to see if I can repeat the resolution steps.

Been traveling and just got back and saw this – I realized I never definitively spelled out how the issue was resolved.

I dumped out the postmeta table and what became clear is that the post_id counter somehow reset back to an earlier number. I never researched how this could have happened because I knew our origin and how our production sites were created. There had been multiple people doing testing and integration to a staging site – at some point months before going live – that test site was cloned into production for several sites that were of similar function – so the issue was replicated at that point.

So in our situation, all the “earlier” post_id’s were for orders that had long been deleted. So it was simple – I just backed up the table and then wrote a sql delete for the earlier (sorted by meta_id) records using the duplicated post_id’s.

Hope this explanation helps a bit more and helps others that may come across this in the future.
