Random 404’s on the backend

  • Lately I’veen getting 404 on the backend… for example when you try to update a plugin, instead of getting the new screen I get a 404.

    If I refresh the page I get the correct one.

    Am I the only one getting this type of problems? For me it is happening every 5 to 10 screend in the backend (sometimes when posting, when activating or de-activating a plugin, etc).

    I haven’t been able to find a pattern yet that’s why I’m trying to see if anyone else is having similar issues.

    I’m running a WordPress 3.0 installation on Dreamhost with a custom theme (that never gave me any problems for the last 2 years) with only one hook on the functions.php file (body_class()).

    I’ve tried deactivating plugins and some other tests.

    Any other ideas?

  • Have you tried:

    – switching to the default theme to rule out any theme-specific problems?

    – resetting the plugins folder by FTP or phpMyAdmin? Sometimes, an apparently inactive plugin can still cause problems.

    – re-uploading the wp-admin and wp-includes folders from a fresh download of WordPress?

    – increasing the available memory?

    I’ve tried all of the above BUT switching to the default theme.

    I can’t switch it right now.

    After re-uploading the wp-admin and wp-includes the 404 problems are gone (at least for now).

    Any more ideas?

    I’m seeing another issue… I don’t know if it is just me or a widespread problem.

    From time to time when I login into my backend the navigation marks that there are 4 updates… when I reload the page or go into the updates page, there is nothing to update.

    Can this things be related?

    I’m seeing this in more than one blog and from what I can gather in the forums it looks like there are at least 2 o 3 more people having this problem.

    I’ve been having this problem for months before 3.0 upgrade. I would say about 1/2 the time my backend crashes.

    Are you on Dreamhost?

    I get lots of random 404s when working in the backend. I’m on Dreamhost. I’ll try some of the suggestions above.

    This is happening to me too. A lot. I’m also on Dreamhost. Post something, get the 404, reload, then it follows through. Login page, updating things. All the time, no pattern. Frustrating.

    The same here. My site is also on DreamHost. I have talked to their engineer. The told me that my memory is using up. But it is so strange that I was running 52 plugins smoothly before. but now my site is running 30+ plugins, and one of them is for cache. How could it be as RAM consuming as before?
