Radial Search – within x miles of School X

    I am thinking about purchasing the Property Hive Radial Search add on but would like to know how easy it would be do customise to do the following:

    Instead of postcode or address users could search on a custom field which would be “school name” as in “find properties within x miles of School X”.

    At the backend there would be a lookup so that the postcode of that school could be used to return properties.

    Has anyone done anything similar?

    I know the same question was posted to us via email but I’m posting my reply here for the benefit of others:

    We use Google to get co-ordinates for a search entered so as long as Google understands this then yes, you should be fine. I’ve done a test by entering a school I’m familiar with and it did work.

    I think the only thing we might want to do is do a little bit of jiggery-pokery whereby we append the entered term with the word ‘School’.

    For example, if the user is wanting to search for a school called Park Lane, we’d want to tell Google to search for ‘Park Lane School’ and not ‘Park Lane’.

    On another related note, I think there’s probably a lot of schools that share a similar name so might need to again tell Google to only search for schools in a specific area, which we can do and I’m happy to advise on this also if/when the time comes.
