Quotation marks displayed as entities

  • We’re using the German translation and I noticed the quotation marks in the notices (po file IDs 6-9) don’t get output as quotation marks but as the literal entities. In the German translation they’re encoded as Unicode entities and I suspect some filter mangles that first ampersand ignoring the hash. This doesn’t occur with non-Unicode entities, so I did those replacements:

    &#_8222 → &_bdquo; and &#_8220 → &_ldquo; (“_” for wp.org not to mangle it)

    I’d like to suggest to apply this to the whole file as these entities are the named equals of gthe Unicode entities – and I hope to not get that reverted back on the next language file update I do ??

    WooCommerce extensions generally do not include any translation files at all. We have not included any German translations in WooCommerce Product Dependencies.

    Have you perhaps generated your own translations, or used another plugin to do this automatically?

    If so, then please get in touch with the developers of that plugin and ask them for advice on how to fix the German translation.

    With that said, we recommend using a plugin such as Loco Translate to create your own localizations.

    Hi and thanks for the reply.
    That’s a bit confusing now. I’ve installed your plugin, noticed the entities, went to look for translation files and found them in wp-content/languages/plugins. I didn’t put them there and I definitely didn’t create the files – although I’m familiar with the process because I have translated plugins before.

    If we have multi-language sites we use WPML, but this isn’t one, WPML isn’t installed and nothing else that would translate something automatically. The thought of automatic translation seems dreadful to me.

    To be clear, I edited the translation in the po/mo and am using this currently. No issue there. But wherever the translation came from, an update would overwrite my changes. Is there maybe something like community translations here in the official repo I’m not aware of?
