the problem is that your category search attribute is the category name and not the category ID -> [events_list category="x" year="2012" order="DESC"] where x is the events category id; category ID is located at Events > Event Categories ( if ID is not displayed try to click Screen Option > enable ID then click apply )

So, 2nd half of that question, is it possible to do some sort of short code that just calls up all previous events instead of using (year=”2012″) so it would just keep calling up the previous events as the years roll on?
