questions of strategy concerning blog transfers

  • Hey, been studying WP for a few weeks now, and think I’ve covered the basics of it. I am now ready to undertake the task of transferring my whole blog, which, I know, is likely to last a few months. The blog is entirely made of static pages (Front Page), and there’s a lot of them. So here’s a VERY general question to someone who might have done this before.
    What is the best strategy, regarding the archives? In order to keep all links alive, should I attempt to give the exact same id to each of the posts? Or is there a way to redirect all those links?

  • Another idea, and one that is incredibly easy to implement, would be to just not try to import them. Keep the old site itself in it’s current form as the archive, and just rename the index file, or something. My favorite thing about this method is that it shows a transition point, and shows how your style has matured.

    i had no idea B2 could import blogger files when i first installed it. and i closed my blogger account when i shifted… the old blog files are hosted as static files ?? on my server…
    works for me… i hate the fact that i did not let the old blogger based blog stray on the net like orphaned child that i could have imported now! almost 100 lost entries… ??

    Thanks for the tip, Uberwald. I thought of it but for a few reasons I’m not sure that it’s the best way to go.
    First, there’s this thing about the search feature: presumably the engine would’nt be able to search in the old files if they’re not integrated, so… Second, what about the archives? Also, I’m wondering whether search engines would be able to scan the whole thing. So, I don’t know…

    hi, so how would you like transfer from one wp blog to another? say you want to transfer from a nightly to a stable?

    if google is nice to you, you can just use google search box with some customization…
