Hi. I have installed the UP and authenticated it with a Dropbox account. I have read the FAQ from beginning to end. I still have some questions, however. Essentially, I am worried about the resources that will be consumed and the amount of time the backup will take. Here are my specs:

The site I am backing up is hosted on “standard” dedicated server on Bluehost.com, which has two 2.3-GHz dual-core CPUs. It is the only website on that server and it gets on average 10,000 visitors a day. The site’s total size is about five gigabytes.

    Basically I have three questions:

    1. Is it safe to do a backup on a system like this?

    2. About how long will it take?

    3. Are subsequent backups faster than the initial backup? (Ideally I would back it up every day, because the site gets 15-20 new posts per day. But if it hogs up the CPU and/or takes hours and slows down the site, I might not.)

    Thanks!
    Emanuel

    Hi Emanuel,

I can’t really answer questions about the performance of Bluehost servers.

For 3., the answer is that all backups are full. Incremental backups may be added as a new feature in future, but they are not a current one.

    Best wishes,
    David

I may be able to provide a little insight into Bluehost, (although I do not work for them, and can only speak from personal experience).

If you are on the standard “dedicated” hosting, you shouldn’t have a problem with cpu usage, although I do not know if they place a cap on the amount of traffic running to/from the dedicated server. It is very possible that they do this, and I would check with them directly.

A 5gig backup is pretty big, and yes, you should be doing incremental backups, rather than full. I am assuming this is a Linux-based server?

Since you have full access to a dedicated server, I would actually suggest you get someone to write you a script that does an incremental backup through CRON. That most likely will be the best thing for you. I do not know if there are other backup plugins that will do it, but with a dedicated server, you can do your own, a script will allow you to backup whenever you want it scheduled, at a specific time of night, make the backups redundant, (daily, weekly, monthly, etc). I think that is your best option.
