    Hi there,

I have been testing the free version and we have many thousands of images which were detected as not in use, this was expected as we import a lot of media and much of it is no longer required or not attached to a live post.

However, I have some questions as I noticed the app picked up a lot of thumbnails and I want to understand how different media sizes are handled when they are connected to a live post but are not in use.

    So my questions are:
    1. Does the app report unused media sizes of images connected to live posts as ‘not in use’? E.g. Large, Medium, Thumbnail.

    2. Is there special treatment of thumbnails specifically? Are these always reported as ‘not in use’ if they are not present in a post?

    3. I see there is an option to ‘Hide Thumbnails’ under the UI settings. Does this hide thumbnails from the scan while still removing them or does this disable the removing of thumbnails? I found this option confusing.

The reason this matters is that many sites have widgets which display new or popular posts on the fly using the featured image thumbnail and Media Cleaner would not be aware of this so removing them would break those post widgets.

Regardless of how the app handles these scenarios, I suggest improving the UI and documentation to make it clear how the app handles the detection and reporting of unsued image sizes connected to live posts. It’s critical the user understand this behaviour before removing any images from a website.

Aside from these minor issues, the app works really well and I plan to upgrade to the pro version once this is cleared up.

    Thanks,

    Phil.

    Hi Phil,

I am curious about this bit:

picked up a lot of thumbnails

. The free version works with media entries, so it’s not really specific file sizes (and therefore, thumbnails). So I wonder what you meant by that?

Does the app report unused media sizes of images connected to live posts as ‘not in use’? E.g. Large, Medium, Thumbnail.

The Media Library scan (available in the Free) checks for usage of media entries. If the Medium size of Media is used somewhere, then the Media entry is marked as being used, of course.

    2. Is there special treatment of thumbnails specifically? Are these always reported as ‘not in use’ if they are not present in a post?

Not with the Media Library method. With the Filesystem method, every file is scanned independently, so in that case, yes. But of course, I wonder what you mean by that since you are using only the Free version ??

    3. I see there is an option to ‘Hide Thumbnails’ under the UI settings. Does this hide thumbnails from the scan while still removing them or does this disable the removing of thumbnails? I found this option confusing.

This is strictly a UI setting, it doesn’t affect the scan in any way ?? It just show/hide the Thumbnail/Preview of the Media entry in the results.

    Cheers ??

    Hi Jordy,

Thanks for the reply, it’s clear for me now that the plugin operates at the ‘media entry’ level and not the ‘media size’ level. I think why I got confused is because of all the talk about removing ‘thumbnails’, maybe something to look at there.

    Regards,

    Phil.
