I am thinking of my upgrading php from 5.6 to 7 as this is a recommended version for wordpress.

I am trying to see if I should be aware of anything before upgrading. Does upgrading to php 7 require me to upgrade mySQL version too?

I don’t have access to server root, should I request a ticket to my hosting provider to upgrade php 7? should there be anything that also needs to be upgraded?

Yes. WP recommends PHP 7. Use 7.0.x, though, not 7.1.x as I’ve encountered some issues with plugins on 7.1.

@sterndata which version of 7.0.x would be the safe one? 7.0.4?? if you can recommend a specific version, I would really appreciate it.

    I’m using 7.0.15 without problems.
