Question regarding obfuscation method

By coincidence I stumbled across this native WordPress function: antispambot( $email_address, $hex_encoding ) introduced in WP version 0.71. I was curious why you opted for a custom implementation of seemingly similar functionality in your plugin. Does your code have better performance, does it produce better obfuscation, etc? No criticism, I love your plugin, just trying to satisfy my curiosity ??
