Question on Technorati tags and code in my post

  • My catgories are working out fine as Technorati tags. But, I had a special situation that I was trying to get working and it didn’t.

    I wanted to assign a category to a post that was not in my category list–it was a one-time use for that category and I didn’t want it in my category list. It was “Michael Jackson”.

    I read in Technorati.com that I could do this in the post:

    <category>[tagname]</category>

    That didn’t work.

    Then I tried this in the post:

    <a href="https://technorati.com/tag/[tagname]" rel="tag">[tagname]</a>

    It didn’t work either.

    Shouldn’t either of those things worked to assign a one-time category to the post?

    Actually, Technorati automatically uses your categories as tags.

    Yes, I know that. But if you read my question again, I said that ADDITIONALLY I want to add my blog article to a category that is not in my category list.

    My blog is about Google, so my categories are about Google. But one recent article was about Michael Jackson and I wanted it to show up under the Technorati tag “michael jackson”. I did not however want to add a permanent category of Michael Jackson. That’s why I wanted to do what I was asking.

    Guess it’s not possible to do what I did, even though Technorati says I can.

    It should be possible, but I think something’s broken. I just don’t know whether it’s in WP or Technorati!

    FWIW, I was able to get this to work earlier this month (I made a post about April 1 pranks with the tag “April Fools” and it showed up), but posts in the last couple of days haven’t shown up in either href-labeled tags or category-based tags.

    Try bunnies techorati tags, or something to that effect. Its in the wp-plugins repository. I use it and it works well.

    I think I found my problem… Technoratibot hasn’t pulled my feeds — or my journal — since Monday (despite standard pingomatic hits *and* manual pinging). For some reason they’re polling the root page of my website instead.

    But again, as of a few weeks ago, what you were trying to do seemed to work.

    Technorati has been very “flaky” the last few days. That could be related.

    Update: I reported the spider problem to technorati, and they apparently made some changes in the last couple of days. They fixed the problem, and my tags have started showing up. Try pinging Technorati to make sure they re-fetch your site, and see if the tags start showing up.

    Oh, to clarify the original issue (of what code to use) — use <a href="..." rel="tag">...</a>. The <category>...</category> code only works in the RSS feed and is generated automatically by WordPress. Or use a plugin.

    I also have noticed funny technorati stuff, seems to work only 100% when using the pingomatic or at the site itself.

    Thanks everyone.

    There does seem to be something weird going on with Technorati. I’m at the same Link count for my site for the last week or two, yet I’m postive that there are many new linkers now. In fact, what’s really strange is that I see the new linkers at the top of the list, yet it’s cutting some others off somehow so that it will always stay at the same count of linkers. Weird.

    Technorati pulls tags from your Atom feed. If it doesn’t show up as a category or a rel="tag" link in your feed, then it won’t show up in Technorati’s tag pages.
