• I run a small private site that requires login for all…

I installed bbpress on my site and it works fine. BUT, it doesn’t have the ability for people to include attachments in their posts. BUT, OTOH, it has a nifty plugin that notifies members of new posts, which is huge.

I have been looking at simple:press as an alternative in that it does have a plugin that will allow attachments, but I can’t find anything like the notifier.

I’m looking for info from anyone who has used both and the pros and cons of each.

    TIA

    Bob

  • bbPress is the Corky Thatcher of WP forums. It’s developmentally challenged, so to speak, and you can tell just by looking at it. Actually trying to use confirms it. They’re slow about incremental fixes and updates. I don’t think any of the developers are too concerned with it.
Testing my site with bbPress, it is much slower than running it with Simple Press. Benchmark tests show it’s not just perception.
There is a bbPress plugin for attachments. And some for bbcode, richtext, and other features a normal forum has. But these will slow down your site even more.
Simple Press was good until they switched their support model. Now you can’t even look at the documentation without paying for it. I could understand making the support forum members-only… Nevermind that they implemented this a couple weeks after I made a donation to them. No documentation? Forget it.

Mingle is supposed to be pretty good. I haven’t tried it out yet, but those who use it seem quite happy with it. It’s only one guy maintaining it (Simple Press is only two guys), but he seems to enjoy it and is fairly responsive, even as he’s working on building the next version from scratch.
