• I’m wondering if it’s possible to manage multiple post categories separately in a single wordpress site. For example, I want to have both a News page and a blog page on my site. When I post a new News posting, I want it to appear on my news page ONLY, not on my blog page. I also currently use a “latest posts” widget on my homepage to create a news section. I want to be able to keep that to just the posts tagged in the “news” category. I’d also like to do the exact same thing with blog posts. Can I separate the two different types of posts by category and manage them that way?

  • thats what a blog is for, to post news. like a news feed, a blog syndicates content, however you can post to as many categories as you wish separately by creating categories under your POST menu. If you want the post to be singular, you will need a single post plugin, however you cannot escape the post to your blog. its works the same way as twitter or facebook, like a news feed. if its necessary the to do this via your blog, then the only way would be to create a page, thus you will need a theme that can do this or you’ll need a plugin that can create independent pages. otherwise create a static html page separately with an html editor.

Thanks. I was hoping to be able to use my news section strictly for news about my company and it’s clients, while using the blog for specific content streams. They are in fact, two completely separate pieces of content and serve different purposes for my company. People may subscribe to the blog to read articles I’ve written on topics they care about. The News section is really more updates on the state of the company, recent accomplishments, press releases etc., but not necessarily stuff people will need to receive or be bogged down with in RSS feeds. I will certainly look into your other suggestions.

you dont need to show your posting page as your front page. you can use another page like the way you want. the news feed (blog) acts like an update for all to read. just head over to your settings menu and click on reading and set your page viewing there.

@esl2424: Are you trying to output a category-specific feed? Or do you want to create a page of posts from a specific category?

Hi. Both actually. I’d like to create a page (and a featured posts widget) from a specific category only. I’d also like to set up a RSS feed from that category.

For the page of posts, see this Codex entry. And this section will give you details of how to link to a category specific feed.

    thanks!

I don’t know if this fits into esl2424’s initial query, but I too wanted to have two separate post categories on my website. I am using WordPress with the TwentyTen theme and found this workaround helpful to me to do so:
https://www.zeroatoms.com/create-a-second-blog-in-wordpress-how-to/comment-page-1/#comment-4531 the solution was just what I wanted, a place to run a separate blog on my site. I was running WP 3.0.1 when I did it and just a couple of days ago, I upgraded to WP 3.1.2 and now the posts in my second blog are also showing up on my main blog page as well. I’ve written to the fellow at zeroatoms.com for further assistance on this but have yet to get a reply. Perhaps he is working on a solution now. But in the meantime, I thought I’d wade through the WP forums for some help and came upon this thread. Does anyone here have a possible answer? I am a newbie when it comes to PHP and WP, so am trying to get my feet wet. Thanks.
