  • Database server is where the MySQL is placed. Commonly it’s placed in localhost, in other word the same server as your account is hosted.

Although some hosting host their MySQL server outside the main server for storing files. You have to ask with your host about this.

I only recently went through this with my server. Their database server name is “mysql.bluedomino.com” rather than “localhost” as in the wp-config example.

Blue Domino, unlike most servers, has round-the-clock technical support by email, chat, or telephone–really! So it’s easy to query them.

If you have to fill out a tag and wait, then try signing in to the server’s ControlPanel (or similar) and look for the element that handles MySQL. You may have already managed to register your data base with wp-config. If that’s the case, the MySQL element should tell you what the four configuration variables are: Your username, your password, the database name, and your server name. That’s the server name to use in wp-config.
    Good luck.

Well, I’ve got a little different issue but it’s close.

I’ve got MySQL running on a Sol10 x86 box. The server is definitely up.

I did as the install docs said and put a user called wordpress in MySQL and put a password on it. I’ve got those in the wp-config file, along with the database name, wordpress. I’ve also put localhost in the wp-config.php file as well but when I try to log in, I get the error page that maybe the username/password is wrong, that the hostname is wrong or the server isn’t up.

    I’m getting a little frustrated.

Did you grant permission for this user to use the database?

    Skippy,

Yes, I did give wordpress permissions, via phpMyAdmin, to the database.

Here’s what the error looks like:

    Error establishing a database connection

This either means that the username and password information in your wp-config.php file is incorrect or we can’t contact the database server at localhost. This could mean your host’s database server is down.

    * Are you sure you have the correct username and password?
    * Are you sure that you have typed the correct hostname?
    * Are you sure that the database server is running?

If you’re unsure what these terms mean you should probably contact your host. If you still need help you can always visit the WordPress Support Forums.

Now, with the password hidden, heres what’s in my wp-config.php file:

    DB name is wordpress
    user is wordpress
the password is exactly as I set it
host name was blank, changed it to localhost. It didn’t work blank either.

Collation is set to utf8-swedish (??!!??)

This must have happened during installation, even though MySQL is set for utf8-english. Could this be the cause?

That collation is correct – honest !

Okay, so much for that. Now, I’m really wondering what the heck is going on. I even went so far as to use the mySQL client on the server to set the password for the wordpress user and then totally redid the wp-config.php file.

Note that I *was* able to run, at one time, the installation file and actually got a login and password and then made to wp-login.php…and that’s as far as THAT went.

This was the ONLY time I have made it to the wp-login screen. However ,the user name and password given me did NOT work. ??

Okay. See the topic Initial Login issue to see what’s happened since. I’m a little further than I was.
