• Hi all,
I’ve read as much documentation, forum discussions, and tutorials as I can find on moving my free wordpress.com blog to my own host. I am so new at anything having to do with site building, though, and I so don’t want to mess anything up, that I hope someone can answer a couple of questions I still have.

I have my host, WordPress 2.7 installed, and have uploaded my personalized header. I wanted to get “set up” before moving as I don’t want to move it, and then have to spend days and days getting it to look right.

My first question: should I go ahead and add the widgets on the new blog now, (categories, recent posts, blogroll, etc) or wait until I import my old blog data? Or does it matter?

Second question: I’ve read that there can be problems with comments coming along, something about permalinks, and that youtube videos won’t export/import. Is this true, and if so, how do you handle it?

Any comments, suggestions, advice greatly appreciated.

  • On your first question, I would import everything first. Don’t set the categories or other such things if you’re going to import the old, or you’ll get errors.

I don’t know the answers to the second question, sorry!

Thanks, Sister, for your reply. I’ll do that. I’m nervous about making the move, just don’t want to lose anything.

    Thanks again.

Just make sure you backup and you can relax…

I did a migration a few months ago. Just keep the old site up while you set up the new site, then update links to the new site later. It will take time for the new site to build up any traffic anyway.

If you set things up first before moving chances are you’ll have to change things later too. I don’t think I had problems with comments coming along. As for permalinks, make sure the style of links in the old site matches in the new site so you can easily redirect posts from the old site. That’s a problem I’m having now since mine are different ??

    good luck
