Query Strings in permalinks

When using query strings in the url we can get them to work when we are not using permalinks e.g. ?registration=LJ54%20BKN&vehiclemake=Peugeot&vehiclemodel=206%20Allure%20CC&year=2%2C005&mileage=38%2C000&price=3%2C495 will work when not using any permalinks

When ever we set it to postname or anything else they will stop working. Can any one explain why this happens or what needs to be done so they will transfer the data across while still having permalinks active.
