Quality compromised on resized images?
-
Coming from a conventional print/paper background, I find it hard to accept that automatic downsizing of my images for different purposes throughout my site doesn’t involve compromises. My instinct tells me to upload different sizes of an image which appears in various sizes on my pages – then I know that I have optimised each one in Photoshop and that they should therefore display at their best (except perhaps when re-sized responsively).
I favour .png file types since these are lossless and will presumably scale better than .jpg compressed images which invariably come with some noise. So can I trust the “machine” to do a professional job of resizing my images – or is it best practice to upload different sizes of the same image?
