Punctuation shows up as question marks after upgrade to 4.0

    I upgraded to 4.0 on Friday and now apostrophes, quotation marks, and ellipses are showing up like so: ? (white question mark in a black diamond).

    I looked around, but the support posts I found are all very old. They reference adding some code to wp-db.php to change the encoding language to utf-8, but I’m guessing the php file has changed since WP 2.x and I don’t know whether/where/what to insert.

    WP version: 4.0
    Theme: Twenty twelve child

    I’ve tried deactivating all my plugins.
    Everything is up to date.

    I’m using Dreamhost and can access mySQL, but I really don’t know how to make any changes on that end if that is where the problem is. I’ve contacted Dreamhost with a support ticket and am waiting on their response as well.

    Did you upgrade from wp2?

    Your webpage is utf8 but the data base in probably not. Dreamhost should be able to fix it for you if you don’t want tp mess with the data base.

    I’ve been upgrading all along, but the issue only started with the most recent one, and all the support documentation I can find is for earlier versions. I hope you’re right and that Dreamhost can help.

    I ended up using Updraft Plus to restore to an earlier version, and everything looks good now!

    My email JUST decided to deliver this…

    This usually happens with your wp-config.php setting the DB_CHARSET to utf8 when your DB isn’t. You can change that value to define( 'DB_CHARSET', '' ); as a test.
