Pull Quotes

Hello.
I am trying to use a pull quotes tutorial that I found at https://www.webdesignerwall.com/tutorials/simple-double-quotes/

When I added the code to my blog it looks wonky and the left quote dissapears. Here is a link https://amduffy.com/brightwash/archives/134 I think the first-letter attribute? isn’t being recognized.

Would there be any reason for this? When I tested this in a blank html page it worked.
